back to topNot necessarily, if your machine is registered and taxed for the road, it will need to be insured. (If a vehicle is taxed, it must be insured and vice versa) however there are some circumstances where the Road Traffic Act definition of a Public Highway means that your machine might technically be on a Public Road even though it’s a work site. Eg If you are working on a housing estate and some of the houses are occupied with residents driving to and from them through where you might be working. Because the public has access to this area, this would be classed as a public highway and if you caused damaged to a car with your mini digger for example, this could be a Road Risks claim even though the mini digger is not registered for the road.

back to topYes you are. This is something that is very often overlooked by Insurance Brokers. Many people think that because they’ve got hired in plant insurance that they’re fully covered but they are not. JCB Insurance can arrange ‘open’ insurance to cover your legal requirement to have Third Party cover for hired in plant travelling on public roads?

back to topYes you do. Under the Government’s ‘Continuous Insurance Enforcement’ legislation if your machine is taxed for the road, it need to be insured as well – and vice versa. If you do not have the machine insured, you need to SORN it otherwise you risk fines.

back to topNo. Put simply, if the machine travels on the public highway, even if that is just crossing the road, it needs to be insured for use on the road.

back to topNo, You need to have the correct entitlement on your Drivers’ licence. Usually, if you have passed a regular car driving test (Category B) you’ll get entitlement to drive Agricultural Tractor (Category F) this covers most items of Plant equipment which are registered as ‘Specialist Vehicles’. If in doubt however, please check with the DVSA

back to topIf the accident was on a construction site where the public does not have unrestricted access then the Road Risks insurance will probably not cover this. This would more likely be classed as damage to third party property which would be covered by your Public Liability Insurance.
