If you have any employees, it is a statutory requirement to have Employers’ Liability Insurance. It protects your legal liability arising from death or injury to employees whilst they are at work. I am a Sole Trader – What Insurance do I need?

You only need insurance by law if you Employ someone (then you need Employers' Liability Insurance) or if you have a Motor Vehicle on the road.

We would strongly recommend that you consider taking Public Liability Insurance however to protect your legal liability arising from injury or death to third party persons (i.e. people who are not your employees) and damage to their property caused as a result of your work activities.

I have just started my own company. What is the minimum insurance I need before I start work?

In the UK, there are only 2 types of insurance that are compulsory : Employers Liability and Third party Motor Insurance.

You will therefore need to consider Combined Liability insurance in addition to any motor insurance for your cars, vans, lorries and Plant as a minimum.

Generally, it is not cost effective for you to obtain insurance on a contract by contract basis. Most contractors take out annual insurance based on estimates for the year allowing for the highs and lows, spreading premium payment throughout the year by monthly direct debit.

Why do you need my Employers Tax Reference Number (ERN)?

All insurers are now required to supply the ERN to the Employers' Liability Tracing Office.

The Employers Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) is an independent industry body comprising members who are EL insurers.

From April 2011, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) required all Employers Liability (EL) insurers to publish all current EL policies on a website in a searchable format. EL insurers can satisfy this obligation by becoming a member of ELTO and supplying data to the EL Database (ELD).

The ELD is accessible for claimant searches from this data via www.elto.org.uk and is used to trace EL policies.

As your brokers, it is our responsibility to capture the necessary information so that insurers have all relevant information for onward transmission to ELTO.

How quickly will I receive the Paperwork?

If you buy your insurance online, the documents will be emailed to you as soon as you complete the purchase. If we arrange your insurance from our Offices, paperwork is usually sent the same day but if there are any delays, we will keep you informed.

Can I spread the cost of my Public and Employers’ Liability Insurance?

Yes. We can spread the cost usually over up to 10 monthly instalment. This is subject to a small interest charge and usually a card payment deposit is required for new policies
